Iran sees US, Israeli role in scientist's killing

Tehran, January 12, 2010

Iran's Foreign Ministry said there were signs of Israeli and US involvement in the killing of a university nuclear scientist in Tehran on Tuesday, state broadcaster IRIB said.

A remote-controlled bomb killed the Tehran University nuclear scientist this morning. "As a result of the bomb planted by Zionist and American agents two cars and a motorcycle were severely damaged and the windows in the surrounding residential units were shattered," IRIB said.

"In the initial investigation, signs of the triangle of wickedness by the Zionist regime, America and their hired agents, are visible in the terrorist act," it quoted the office of the Foreign Ministry's spokesman as saying.

"Such terrorist acts and the apparent elimination of the country's nuclear scientists will definitely not obstruct scientific and technlogical processes," it added.

Tehran's chief prosecutor Abbas Jafari Dolatabadi also pointed the finger of blame at Israel and the United States.

"In view of the fact that martyr Massoud Ali-Mohammadi was a physicist and nuclear scientist, most probably the Mossad and CIA intelligence services were involved in his assassination," IRIB quoted him as saying.

The bombing follows the disappearance in June of Shahram Amiri, a university researcher working for Iran's Atomic Energy Organisation, during a pilgrimage to Makkah.

Amiri vanished three months before Iran disclosed the existence of its second uranium enrichment site, near the city of Qom. In December Tehran accused Saudi Arabia of handing Amiri over to the United States. -Reuters
