Thuraya launches first ruggedized satellite terminal

Dubai, June 16, 2014

UAE-based Thuraya Telecommunications Company, a leading Mobile Satellite Services (MSS) operator, has announced the launch of its first ruggedized satellite broadband terminal designed using MIL-SPEC components.

The Thuraya IP Commander will be commercially available from all Thuraya Service Partners in the third quarter, said a statement from the company.

Developed in collaboration with US-based SRT Wireless, the IP Commander is engineered to enable mission-critical voice and data connectivity in mobile or stationary applications in the most extreme and remote environments.

It is well suited for military and governmental operations, as well as other applications including land mobile, energy and mining, said the company in its statement.

The package includes a rugged voice handset that offers clear and uninterrupted voice connectivity across Thuraya’s satellite network, which covers many of the world’s strategic conflict zones, it added.

IP Commander facilitates vital communications at high speeds, essential for C4ISR, blue-force tracking, logistics management and tactical command. Offering IP data rates of up to 444kbps, it is Thuraya’s only ruggedized vehicular terminal capable of achieving streaming IP speeds of up to 384kbps, as well as user-definable asymmetric streaming functionality.

Randy Roberts, the VP of Innovation, said the launch of IP Commander demonstrates the group's commitment to deepen Thuraya’s IP broadband portfolio.

"As global defence and infrastructure budgets shrink, the IP Commander will prove to be a vital element in the communication strategy of government users, delivering great value without compromising on quality and performance. IP Commander’s compact and rugged form factor make it a truly unique product," observed Roberts.

Asher Faredi, the product manager of Land Data at Thuraya, said: "Thuraya is proud to serve the diverse requirements of over 30 government entities globally."

"In developing IP Commander, we listened to our government users’ feedback to deliver a product that offers voice and data capabilities, as well as the ability to withstand the toughest conditions.”-TradeArabia News Service
