Bahrain unveils human rights roadmap
Manama, April 1, 2008
Bahrain has unveiled a new human rights roadmap, which it hopes will improve living conditions in the country.
It includes the setting up of a new National Institution for Human Rights, increased inspections of labour camps and better protection of domestic workers, who are currently excluded from the country's labour laws.
The new steps feature in a National Action Plan, which was unveiled by minister of state for foreign affairs Dr Nazar Al Baharna on Monday.
Other initiatives include plans to provide police and government workers with human rights training, as well as the setting up of a taskforce to make sure Bahrain complies with its international human rights commitments.
They are among a raft of measures outlined by Dr Al Baharna just a week before Bahrain's rights record goes under the United Nations scanner.
The country is due to appear at the UN Human Rights Council, Geneva, on April 7 for a review of its human rights performance.-TradeArabia News Service
