Bahrain pledges to continue with subsidies

Manama, January 25, 2011

The Bahrain government has pledged to continue pumping money to subsidise food and services.

Chairing a work meeting, His Royal Highness Prime Minister Prince Khalifa bin Salman Al Khalifa said subsidies reflected the government's firm resolve to ease the burden on citizens.

He also stressed the government's drive to constantly reassess its policies, including subsidies.

'The aim is to ensure the government's lifeline reaches deserving citizens and enables the needy to meet life's burdens,' he said.

He outlined plans to restructure and redirect government subsidies to make sure they reach citizens who deserve them most and cautioned against attempts to spark fears or politicise the government's restructuring schemes.

He highlighted the government's unflinching efforts to find new mechanisms to ease the burden of citizens.

'The government which cares for its citizens never overburdens them,' he said, describing subsidies as a key tool to reach out to needy categories and give them a helping hand.

He also outlined plans to boost subsidies to expand the social umbrella and benefit targeted categories.

HRH the Premier urged efficient plans and programmes to bolster Bahrain's food security.

He stressed the importance of exploring innovative mechanisms to meet Bahrain's needs.

In this regard, he gave instructions to promote investment in the fields of agriculture, animal production and fishing, whether in Bahrain or abroad.

He also ordered feasibility studies into the establishment of a food security company, underscoring the importance of such a project to protect basic commodities against volatile global prices.-TradeArabia News Service
