UAE to boost voters for advisory council

Dubai, June 15, 2011

The United Arab Emirates will increase the number of eligible voters for its second-ever advisory assembly elections to 80,000 from less than 7,000, the head of the group's election committee said on Wednesday.

"We expanded the electorate this time to over 80,000 voters," said Anwar Gargash, minister of state for foreign affairs, who also heads the Gulf monarchy's national election committee.

Elections for the advisory national body are scheduled for September 24. Half of the 40-seat Federal National Council will be chosen by vote.
