More than 100 students from Palms Primary School gathered yesterday and performed patriotic songs during the morning assembly.

The countrymen celebrated the National Day despite several protesters causing traffic chaos by attempting to block a major highway naer Budaiya.

Sources told the Gulf Daily News, our sister publication, that police who tried to move the protesters trying to occupy Budaiya Highway were attacked with stones and other objects, prompting officers to respond with tear gas.

Local residents said the protesters had blocked several side streets leading off the highway, prompting police to close the busy road altogether to prevent an accident - resulting in major tailbacks stretching all the way back to Manama on the adjoining Shaikh Khalifa bin Salman Highway.

Vehicles travelling in the opposite direction were said to be queuing all the way from Hamad town.-TradeArabia News Service
