Bahrain to join GCC disaster aid body

Manama, December 10, 2013

Bahrain is set to become a member of a regional risk management centre that advises governments on potential security threats.

The Kuwait-based GCC Emergency Risk Management Centre will also co-ordinate Gulf disaster aid and conduct training programmes, said a report in the Gulf Daily News (GDN), our sister publication.

The Shura Council yesterday gave the Bahraini government the go-ahead after the proposal was approved by MPs last month.

Minister of State for Parliament and Shura Council Affairs Abdulaziz Al Fadhel said four Gulf countries are already members of the centre.

"Saudi Arabia, Oman, Kuwait and the UAE have already taken their seats in the centre, but lengthy legislative procedures in Bahrain and Qatar have delayed memberships, but now we are on our way to assume duties with the council's vote," he said.

Meanwhile, the council also approved the unified GCC trademarks law and referred it to His Majesty King Hamad for ratification, after it was approved by parliament last month.

The law regulates procedures of registering a trademark, its duration and protection.

It also deals with the cancellation of a trademark's registration, ownership transfer, encumbering a trademark, seizing a trademark, and contracts licensing the use of a trademark and all related matters through an executive statute.

The law achieves integration between GCC states by unifying commercial and economic laws and policies. Council members also approved two mutual taxation agreements with Brunei and Canada, which were referred to His Majesty. - TradeArabia News Service
