Bahrain ministry 'in the dark' about exports halt

Manama, January 9, 2014

Bahrain's Interior Ministry yesterday said it was unaware of any halt to exports of tear gas from South Korea.

The Financial Times on Tuesday quoted a South Korea Defence Acquisition Programme Administration spokesman saying the deal was off due to human rights complaints, said a report in the Gulf Daily News (GDN), our sister publication.

However, the Interior Ministry said it had "not been informed by South Korea of any ban on the export of tear gas to Bahrain".

"Tear gas is used by Bahrain's police force only as a necessary and proportionate measure and in public order and riot control situations," the ministry said in a statement.

"It is used entirely in compliance with international law.

"Bahrain's police force also acts and adheres fully to internationally-accepted standards that are contained in its Code of Conduct and legal or disciplinary action is taken whenever any policeman or woman in Bahrain is found to have acted contrary to these high standards."

The ministry added the Financial Times acknowledged police were regularly attacked with Molotov cocktails and homemade bombs. - TradeArabia News Service
