Bahrain gets tougher with fuel smugglers

Manama, April 29, 2014

Bahrain will soon introduce tougher penalties for smugglers of diesel and other subsidised petroleum products, a report said.

A new law which aims to combat the smuggling of subsidised oil derivatives was yesterday approved by the Shura Council, reported the Gulf Daily News, our sister publication.

It carries a sentence of between six months and up to three years in jail with a fine that is triple the amount of the smuggled product.

The legislation will be referred to His Majesty King Hamad for ratification.

Meanwhile, the council approved a unified GCC veterinary medicines law and a unified GCC veterinary medical practices law, which are in line with parliament's recommendations and referred it to the King for ratification.

It also approved the new Civil Defence law, which gives more powers to the Interior Ministry's Civil Defence Directorate to come up with safety and security restrictions.

The law obliges the Civil Defence to draw up plans to combat radiation and tackle emergencies, along with chemical, biological and radiation pollution.

It also deals with volunteering in the Civil Defence and having the support of the National Guard in certain matters.

The legislation states that officials can also set rates for some services provided by the Civil Defence. – TradeArabia News Service
