Bahrain rejects US criticism over Russia visit

Manama, May 5, 2014

Bahrain has defended a top-level visit to Russia, which has been criticised by the US government, a report said.

The US State Department revealed it had raised concerns with the Bahrain government last week over the visit to Moscow by His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Crown Prince, Deputy Supreme Commander and First Deputy Premier, reported the Gulf Daily News, our sister publication.

It took place after the US imposed sanctions on seven Russians and 17 companies linked to Russian President Vladimir Putin, while the EU announced asset freezes and travel bans on 15 Russians and Ukrainians.

The measures have been taken in response to Russia's interference in Ukraine, but Bahrain's official government spokeswoman Sameera Rajab said the Crown Prince's visit was not a cause for concern.

"We want to forge relationships and strengthen existing ones with all countries in the world and I don't see the visit as one that warrants such a response," said Rajab. "Russia is a world power and we are keen to have better ties with it."

The visit resulted in a number of bilateral agreements being signed. – TradeArabia News Service
