Skype, Viber face Saudi ban says report

Riyadh, March 25, 2013

Some popular internet-based communcation applications, including Skype, Viber and WhatsApp may be banned in Saudi Arabia if the companies fail to provide monitoring servers in the kingdom, a report said.

Saudi Arabia's Communications and Information Technology Commission (CITC) is threatening block applications that provide conversation and visual communication because they use encrypted connections, the Arab News said citing an Arabic daily report.

The CITC is demanding that it be allowed to monitor the encrypted applications and has given the firms up to the end of this week to comply, the report said.
