Short+Sweet Dubai to offer mask experience

Dubai, July 9, 2013

Short+Sweet, the largest 10-minute theatre festival in the world, is featuring a new acting workshop which will provide participants with an in-depth introduction to mask techniques and a unique experience of full mask theatre.

It is an ideal introduction to mask theatre and performance work for people with no, or little, previous experience of this form, a statement said.

Participants will have the chance to explore how mask training can unlock the door to a more focused physicality in a relaxed and friendly environment.

Workshop leader and associate director of Short+Sweet Dubai Liz Hadaway, who will lead this workshop, explained how exploring mask theatre can help with all kinds of acting.

“Masks can help to enhance performers’ physical movements on stage in all types of theatre, by focusing on the body and non-verbal expression. This workshop will help actors to develop physical awareness and creative devising and storytelling,” she said.

Alex Broun, Short+Sweet Dubai Festival director and international award winning playwright, said: “At Short+Sweet we believe in showcasing different theatrical styles and mask work is one of the oldest and most exciting forms of theatre.”

Throughout the world masks are used for their expressive power both ritually and in various theatre traditions. In the Middle East masks have been embedded in the culture of the region for over 2,500 in dance and also in mime accompanied by music.

“This workshop will explore this extraordinary traditional form which will also help actors and directors develop skills valuable to other theatrical styles. Liz is a world class workshop facilitator and I urge all Dubai actors not to miss this chance to work with her,” said Broun.

The workshop takes place at The Fridge on July 13. – TradeArabia News Service
