Arabsat set to launch interactive MG-TV

Dubai, March 8, 2008

Arabsat, the world’s ninth largest satellite operator and Dubai-based International Media Concepts (IMC) have signed a three-year deal to launch MG-TV, the first-ever interactive television channel in the Arab world.

A top Arabsat official announced this at this year's Cabsat, the largest international electronic media and satellite communications event in the region.

Similar to online gaming, consumers will now be able to play interactive games ranging from sport, action, racing, polling and family oriented games on satellite television. MG-TV will broadcast from Jordan's Media City, the official said.

“The collaboration with MG-TV is exciting. Over the next couple of months, we are looking forward to gauging how people will respond to the new concept in this part of the world. The interest among trade visitors, however, has been positive thanks to our participation at Cabsat. The event enabled us to not only study market trends but also to meet potential business partners for further expanding our satellite service horizons,” said president of Arabsat Khaled Balkhyour.

The 14th edition of Cabsat registered more visitors than last year, with several exhibitors clinching major deals and securing real business leads, according to organisers Dubai World Trade Centre (DWTC).

Yahsat, the UAE’s first ever nationally-owned satellite operator, made its debut appearance at Cabsat this year.

Supported by a $1.7 billion investment from Mubadala Development Company, a strategic investment and development vehicle wholly-owned by the Abu Dhabi government, Yahsat will develop and operate its own hybrid satellite systems to cater to regional market needs.

“We are pleased with our first public appearance at Cabsat 2008. Our presence has provided us with immense opportunities to showcase our services to trade visitors while taking our business to new growth levels. Cabsat has created a strategic platform, enabling us to meet with multiple potential trade partners and organisations. It has surpassed our expectations and we look forward to coming back next year as part of this key industry platform,” said CEO of Yahsat Jassem Mohamed Al Zaabi.

Some of the exciting new launches presented at Cabsat include the new video-on-demand service from the UAE’s e-vision. The product is set to transform the television viewing habits of the UAE public by offering optimum flexibility and interactivity to view preferred content at any given time.

Another first time launch was Eurostar Communication’s Green Box, an eco friendly digital satellite receiver consuming less power and 100 per cent recyclable.

“Cabsat has demonstrated its global status to remain at the forefront of the industry, witnessing the introduction of cutting-edge technology to the region while serving as a pivotal point for ushering in a next generation digital era,” said director general of DWTC Helal Al Marri.

Cabsat will return to Dubai International Convention and Exhibition Centre from 4-6 March, 2009. – TradeArabia News Service
