Metito to build sewage treatment plant in Kabul

Metito, the UAE-based international water desalination and wastewater treatment specialist, has been commissioned to design and build a sewage treatment plant in Afghanistan.

The plant, which will serve a population of 6,000 people in capital Kabul, is currently undergoing the design and procurement stages plant and will be ready by May 19,” said a statement from Metito.

Bassem Halabi, Group business development director in Metito, said 'This contract shows how strong our reputation is abroad. Afghanistan has seen its fare share of misfortune and destruction which has negatively impacted its infrastructure, and we’re delighted to help with the rebuilding of the country.'

The company will employ the latest in extended aeration technology which purifies sewage by the destruction of organic compounds through the use of air, Bassem noted.

These compounds, which are converted to gas, water and sludge form, are then removed and what remains is clear and odor-free effluent water that can be used for various applications, he added.

Decades of civil war has led to the devastation of the Afghani economy in addition to the destruction of much of Afghanistan’s critical water infrastructure, which affects many of its citizens.

“The availability of sanitation facilities is vital to the rebuilding of Kabul. We aim to improve the situation with this projcet and allow citizens access to the most basics of basics: sanitary services.

'Afghanistan isn’t an easy place to work in, but with a dedicated team and support from the local authorities, the plant is expected to be completed by May 19, 2010,” Bassem added.-TradeArabia News Service
