Resort takes part in Red Sea clean-up

Sharm el Sheikh, November 4, 2010

More than 40 guests and staff members of the Sharm el Sheikh Marriott Red Sea Resort held an all-day underwater clean-up programme at Na'ama Bay, South Sinai.

The Underwater Clean-up Day was organised to protect the Red Sea.

The pariticpants teamed up with 20 professional divers from the resort’s Mr Diver Diving Center and of PADI (Professional Association of Diving Instructors) International.

By the end of the day, the group’s efforts netted more than 200 kg of debris, ranging from plastic bags, beverage bottles, beverage cans, rope, cigarettes, airbed pumps, glass, electric pipes and plastic water hoses.

The event was part of an on-going environmental initiative called ‘Know & Protect the Red Sea’ begun earlier this year. Its purpose is to direct community attention to the importance of preserving Red Sea marine life and to raising awareness among the hotel’s associates and guests about how to protect the Red Sea from harm.

Terry Johnson, regional manager of PADI International, said: “Without the tremendous efforts of groups such as the Marriott Resort and Mr. Diver who are continually evaluating the fine balance of the environment and their business needs, our environment could be in threat. This event was a great opportunity for the community and tourists alike to appreciate the local environment and take time to come together and show their appreciation.” - TradeArabia News Service
