Tunisia plans grain import liberalisation

Tunis, December 15, 2010

Tunisia is planning a gradual liberalisation of wheat and barley imports, which are now subject to a state monopoly, an official with the state grains agency told Reuters.

"There is a move towards the liberalisation of the supply of grain, but that will be phased in over the medium term ... maybe over five years at least," said Abd Elaziz Ellili, a departmental chief at the agency, l'Office des Cereales.

"We have given a consultancy firm the task of studying a strategy which will give us an idea of the possible scenarios and procedures necessary for the liberalisation of the grain supply," Ellili said in an interview.

"The liberalisation will be phased in and will not be done randomly ... There were some concerns that led us to be cautious, including high grain prices in the global market which may be reflected on the local consumer," said Ellili. - Reuters
