Giant digital media expo opens in Dubai

More than 750 companies from across 55 countries, including 14 national pavilions, are taking part in Cabstat 2012, the Middle East's largest digital media and satellite exhibition, which opened in Dubai on Tuesday.

Sheikh Hasher bin Maktoum Al Maktoum, the director general, Dubai Department of Information opened the 18th edition of the show which runs upto March 1.

The show organised by Dubai World Trade Centre will witness three days of power-packed business development and knowledge exchange.

The exhibition, being held at the Dubai International Convention and Exhibition Centre, is strictly for trade and business only.

Alongside the comprehensive exhibition will be a conference, workshops and specialist presentations addressing the real issues of the day, from satellite technology to social media.

According to the organisers, top firms will be showcasing the latest products in the broadcasting, digital media and satellite market as they look to capitalise on this potential.

“The Middle East broadcasting, digital media and satellite industries are considered within the most lucrative in the world. Cabsat is the ideal platform for industry professionals worldwide to come together and explore new avenues in this growing market,” remarked Helal Saeed Almarri, CEO of DWTC.

This year's event will be the largest, liveliest and most important Cabstat convention in the show’s history,' he added.

Leading firms including Advanced Media, Al Mazroui, Al Yahsat, Amaranthine, Arabsat, Blusens, EADS Astrium, Canon, Comtech EF Data, Eutelsat, For-A, GlobeCast, Glocom, Grass Valley, Gulfsat, Harris, Hitachi, Horizon Satellite Services, iDirect, Intelsat, Mediacast, Nilesat, Noorsat, Nynex, JVC Oasis, Paksat, SES, Skyband, Sky Stream, Sony, Televes, Telespazio, Thomson Broadcast, Turksat, twofour54, UBMS, VSATplus and many more are showcasing the latest technological advances and generating new business.

The event will also feature the `Thought Incubator` by Dubai Studio City which will cover the impact of technology in shaping the media landscape and the need for audience management systems in the region.

Thought Incubator speakers line-up includes Said Bacho (VP) Middle East and South Asia; Harris, Nick Baratt MBC, Christopher O’Hearn, broadcast projects manager, AD Media; Hossein Jalali, head of Online, Al Ain TV; Jeff Youssef, associated partner, Oliver Wyman as well as representatives from Sony Productions, Etisalat and OSN.

The show will also introduce this year the Cisco Executive Lounge as well as the new Outside Broadcast Area which will feature OB Van’s from the region as well as feature outdoor broadcast technologies from Japan Radio Company and VSAT Plus.

The Sheikh Saeed Halls will also host a 'Vendor Presentation Theatre' featuring product launches and new technology from many international exhibitors.

This impressive presence reflects the huge importance of the region and research for IABM states that the market will be worth $2 billion by 2015, said the organisers.

Canon has invited Emirati film director Nayla al Khaja to talk about the company’s new range of HD cameras.

“There is no doubt that the satellite and broadcasting industry in the Mena region is creatively rich and commercially dynamic,” remarked Trixee Loh, senior VP of Exhibitions, DWTC.

“By working closely with a thriving industry and our partners such as twofour54, we have made some exciting new developments at Cabsat which continue to reinforce the show’s position as a global industry leader,' he added.

Global connectivity leader Cisco, participating for the first time, is building an executive lounge - a place to discover and debate media free from the traditional restrictions of time, place and platform.

According to Loh, Cabsat will be partnering with twofour54 tadreeb who have recently acquired SAE Dubai, a leading higher education institution for broadcasting, film and interactive media to deliver specialist training, workshops and immersive experiences.

This will enable students to review latest products from all the top manufacturers, and talk to application experts at the show.

The event will serve as a platform to encourage the brightest students in the region to seek careers in the growing media sector, he added.

As well as the world’s leading vendors, Cabsat is a tremendous showcase for the industry in the region.

One of the exhibition highlights will be the first outside broadcast truck ever to be built in the UAE, by Best Broadcast Hire. The truck will be one of the many attractions in the outdoor exhibit area, in the Plaza in front of Sheikh Saeed Hall.

Bringing together the two distinct identities of the event into one multi-stream knowledge exchange platform, the Cabsat Academy will feature a mix of complimentary industry-led sessions in one centrally located networking area.

It will include the GVF Satellite Summit organised by Global VSat Forum, as well as twofour54 tadreeb workshops in conjunction with the BBC Academy and INA.

The exhibitions will open from 10am – 6pm on the February 28 to 29 and 10am – 5pm on March 1.-TradeArabia News Service
