Ferrari plans safety recall

Manama, September 6, 2010

Ferrari customers in Bahrain and other Gulf countries are being asked to get their cars modified, after five 458 Italia supercars worldwide caught fire due to an adhesive material.

The small modification involves replacing the adhesive material that caused the fire due to overheating, said Dubai-based Ferrari Middle East and Africa branch public relations manager Ghayda Majdi.

It will only affect 10 cars in Bahrain out of 85 located across the Middle East.

Majdi said that countries' dealers were currently contacting all customers to ask them to bring their cars for the half-day mechanical job.

'This is a safety campaign recall we are doing for all our Ferrari 458 Italia,' she said. 'We are reaching our customers to ensure their safety and their cars' safety as well.'

Majdi said that the adhesive material caused friction between the car's wheel house and the heat shield, which is near the exhaust.

It is reported that Ferrari sent letters to all 1,248 owners of Italia worldwide, asking them to return the car to get the adhesive material replaced.

Five of the 458 Italia catching fire have been reported in Switzerland, France, California and China, starting last July. The owners of the five cars which caught fire will reportedly receive a new model.

An investigation revealed that the problem was in the mounting, adhesive, heat shields and wheel arch assembly. – TradeArabia News Service
