Top ME riders for UAE motocross

Dubai, November 15, 2012

A record line-up of top riders from across the Middle East are set to take part in UAE’s first Arab Motocross Championship event getting under way on Friday.

Organised by the Automobile and Touring Club of the UAE (ATCUAE), the free-to-attend event has attracted 67 riders from Bahrain, Egypt, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Saudi Arabia, Sudan and the host country to the DMX Motocross track in Jebel Ali, and has all the ingredients of a classic motocross spectacle.

The powerful international line-up of competitors are competing in two bike categories (MX1 and MX2) and one pro quad bike category, with many tackling the highly technical 1,600 metre DMX track for the first time.

With today’s (November 15) action dominated by seven hours of practice sessions across all categories, followed by scrutineering, all the riders have now had a feel for the course, although the real test will come tomorrow when the motocross racing action begins in earnest.

Home favourite Mohammed Al Balooshi, who is among ten Emiratis competing this weekend said today after his morning practice run: “The DMX track is very technical. Running counter clockwise, riders have to make a sharp left hand turn from the starting gates, and it will take a very skilled rider to complete the circuit in less than two minutes.”

“I am really looking forward to putting in a top performance on my home turf and I hope there will be plenty of local support getting behind the UAE team tomorrow.”

The riders will have one more practice session at 10 am on Friday, followed by two races for each category in the afternoon, before prize giving rounds off an action packed weekend.

The Arab Motocross Championship 2012 is the first competitive racing series of the Arab Motorcycle Federation (AMF) following its overhaul in August this year at its Riyadh headquarters in Saudi Arabia – a move driven by the Union of Arab National Olympic Committees to take competitive bike racing in the Middle East to the next level.

Dr Mohammed Ben Sulayem, ATCUAE president, and FIA vice president for Sport said: “With this new beginning, we have a solid foundation on which to build a bright new future for motor racing in the Arab world, with a calendar of events run to the international standards laid down by the FIM.”

“We now look forward to some exciting action at the DMX Motocross track in Jebel Ali which has been designed to provide a stern test for many of the top riders from across the Arab world,” he added. – TradeArabia News Service
