World Bank backs Bahrain’s energy project

Manama, October 5, 2012

Bahrain will be provided with technical support by the World Bank for a national initiative to optimise energy usage and protect the environment.

Finance Minister Shaikh Ahmed bin Mohammed Al Khalifa and Minister of State for Electricity and Water Affairs Dr Abdulhussain Mirza yesterday signed an agreement with the bank's Mena strategic planning director Farrukh Iqbal.

Traditional thermal bulbs will be replaced with energy-saving compact fluorescent lamps.

Shaikh Ahmed said the project, approved by the Cabinet, aims at optimal use of resources. Ministries and government agencies will take measures, including thermal insulation and other systems, in their projects and buildings to reduce power consumption as part of the project.

He said online transactions and multi-use recyclable products will also be promoted to reduce paper consumption.

Dr Mirza said the project will help raise the efficiency of lighting in the housing sector and reduce load on the power grid during summer, which in turn will reduce carbon emission levels.

He said a smart lighting system with specifications will be launched after a survey of various sectors, along with awareness campaigns. Mr Iqbal said the project will also help reduce demand and bills. – TradeArabia News Service
