The electricity demand in Qatar will increase by 10 per cent annually over the next five years, said Qatar General Electricity and Water Corporation (Kahramaa).

While Qatar is the world’s largest exporter of LNG and one of the largest exporters of crude oil, it is also one of the world’s largest energy and water consumers, it said.

These staggering figures have fuelled the recent decision to pre-qualify bidders for the tender to build its next independent water and power project (IWPP), which is expected to deliver its first electricity output in late 2016.

The proposed plant will have a power generation capacity of 2,400MW and a desalination capacity of 30 million gallon a day (g/d), said a statement.

Qatar, with the aim of ensuring that project delivery will conform to the highest energy and water efficiency standars, has organised the Qatar Energy and Water Efficiency Conference at the Hilton Hotel Doha from December 8 to 10.

The conference, featuring international experts and industry stakeholders, aims to showcase the country’s efforts to adopt technologies and industry best practices to maximise the efficiency and sustainability of its power and energy programmes and resources.

“Attendees will be able to gain insights into new plans and initiatives that Qatar is undertaking towards developing a sustainable energy and water strategy. The conference provides the best opportunity to get first-hand information about the project opportunities that will arise as government authorities begin awarding contracts for planned energy water projects,” said Edmund O’ Sullivan, chairman, MEED Events, organisers of the conference.

In addition to project opportunities, the conference will present a range of solutions from technology providers on reducing energy and water consumption costs for businesses, as well as insights from known experts on how to improve the operational efficiency of oil and gas production processes.
