Eight developers to bid for Dubai’s coal power project

DUBAI, September 4, 2014

Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (Dewa) has shortlisted eight international developers to send bids for the first phase of the Hassyan Clean-Coal Power project, said a report.

It is in response to the Request for Qualification that it released in May, said the Emirates 24/7 report.

This phase of the project has a capacity of 1,200-MW using clean coal and is expected to be operational by 2020. The tender closing data will be November 26, it said.

"The Hassyan project reflects our commitment to the vision of Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, and the Dubai Integrated Energy Strategy to diversify the energy mix by 2030 to comprise 71 per cent from natural gas, 12 per cent from nuclear power, 12 per cent from clean coal, and five per cent from solar power,” Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, managing director and chief executive officer of Dewa, was quoted as saying.

“Pioneering projects like this one complement our efforts to carry out energy projects that meet increasing demand for energy in Dubai and support sustainable development," he added.
