Indian tax on TV to impact UAE traders

Dubai, August 21, 2013

Imposition of tax by the Indian government on the import of television sets is likely to impact electronics goods retailers in the short to medium term, said a senior executive.

Before the tax imposition, it is estimated that nearly 20,000 sets a month on an average were being carried by passengers from the UAE in to various Indian cities, said Niranjan Gidwani, deputy CEO of Eros Group, a Dubai-based retailer.

The UAE and Dubai in particular is a very significant hub for movement of consumer electronics and digital products, which are hand carried into India, he said.

Very competitive pricing, proximity to India, and between 700 and 800 flights a month from various airlines into the country have added to Dubai’s importance for this business, added Gidwani. - TradeArabia News Service
