SriLankan to probe Heathrow incident

Colombo, October 17, 2007

SriLankan Airlines has launched an internal investigation following a minor incident between the UL502 to Male and Colombo and BA11 to Singapore at London Heathrow Terminal 4 on October 15 at 22:13.

The incident occurred as both planes were taxiing to the runway under the guidance of Air Traffic Control. The wing tips of the planes clipped each other, with only minor damage occurring to both planes, said a SriLankan official.

Immediately after the event the fire brigade were called but soon discharged as damage was limited. All damage is currently being repaired.

No injuries were reported to any of the 286 passengers onboard the SriLankan Airlines flight and all passengers disembarked at midnight and were transferred to a London Hotel.

Air Traffic Control has launched an investigation which will receive full co-operation from SriLankan Airlines, who have also launched their own investigation into the incident and will involve flying in investigation teams from Colombo.

"A full investigation has been launched into this unfortunate incident and we apologise profusely for the inconvenience caused to our passengers. However, maintaining their safety is paramount to SriLankan Airlines and we are pleased with the procedures taken," said head of corporate communications, SriLankan Airlines, Chandana De Silva. - TradeArabia News Service
