Bahrain Air set to launch India flights

Manama, April 19, 2008

Bahrain Air, Manama-based low-cost airline on Saturday announced plans to launch flights to India with Kochi as its first destination.

Bahrain's second national carrier will start its inaugural Bahrain-Kochi service on May 26. The airline will fly thrice a week - Monday, Tuesday and Friday - for the entire summer season, and then launch its daily service starting from October, said a top airline official.

Announcing the launch, Ibrahim Al Hamar, managing director of Bahrain Air, "Our service to the south Indian city of Kochi is our first step into the lucrative market of India, particularly the southern region, to serve the increasing demand from public and in particular the Indian community residing in Bahrain and the other GCC countries or for those who are visiting their families or are for business or leisure.”

"Monday flights will take off at 10:40am from Bahrain airport and arrive at Cochin International Airport at 5:30pm, local time on the same day. The Tuesday and Friday flights will depart Bahrain at 7pm and arrive at Kochi in the early hours of Wednesdays and Saturdays at 02:30am," he said.

He pointed out that Bahrain Air took the initiative entirely on its own to conclude the formalities and secure the clearance for traffic rights to India.

“We are very pleased to be able to serve the large Indian community by way of offering cost effective and comfortable means of travel to and from Bahrain to Kochi,” Al Hamer noted.

“Bahrain Air passengers to Kochi will eventually be able to fly onward to other Indian destinations with the use of a domestic airline, with whom we are in the process of finalising the code sharing arrangements,”  he added.

Kochi is the largest commercial hub in the beautiful South Indian state of Kerala and is also a gateway to the other cities with the same state and others. Kochi is also renowned for special Ayurvedic spas and treatment centers.

Bahrain Air started operations out of Bahrain International Airport on February 3.  Currently it has twice daily services at convenient timings to Dubai and Doha, 5 weekly flights to Alexandria, 4 weekly flights to Beirut and Amman, 3 each to Damascus and Mashad in Iran.

The airline is eyeing two more new destinations in June besides planning to launch two weekly flights to Dhaka.-TradeArabia News Service
