Air show 'will benefit Bahrain economy'

Manama, January 22, 2010

Bahrain yesterday took off as a global transport and trade hub with the opening of the country's first international air show.

It is poised to reap the dividends from hosting the event which "will benefit civil and military sectors, particularly tourism, media and economy", His Majesty King Hamad said.

He was speaking as he opened the three-day show along with the new Sakhir Airbase at a glittering ceremony.

Present were His Royal Highness Prime Minister Prince Khalifa bin Salman Al Khalifa and His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Crown Prince and Deputy Supreme Commander.

"In the name of Allah Almighty we open Sakhir base and signal the start of Bahrain's first ever international air show," His Majesty said, thanking participants and welcoming heads of states, ministers, guests and officials representing aircraft manufacturing companies.

He stressed the importance of the show in spearheading the national economy and optimising development.  "Strategically situated, Bahrain throughout its history has been a crossroad for civilisations and cultures and a trade hub," His Majesty said.

He unveiled a commemorative sculpture at the Defence Hall, signalling the opening of the base and the air show.

"The show brings manufacturers and users under the same roof, reflecting Bahrain's status as a regional centre for transport and trade," His Majesty said.

He hailed the strong presence of manufacturing companies as a sign of the debut show's success.

He paid tribute to Farnborough International for organising the show in Bahrain and hailed the contribution of the BDF and the Civil Aviation Affairs.

He also highlighted the giant strides achieved by the transport and aviation industries which, he said, witnessed new high-tech prowess with every passing day.

His Majesty, HRH the Premier and HRH the Crown Prince later toured the show and were briefed on the aircraft on display.

Later, His Majesty visited oil development company Tatweer Petroleum's stall at the show. The company was opened by HRH the Crown Prince on Wednesday.

Oil Minister and National Oil and Gas Authority chairman Dr Abdulhussain Mirza gave an update on the company's ambitious vision. He also visited the offices of Abu Dhabi Airports Company and was briefed on air and support services. - TradeArabia News Service
