Omran wins top leisure project award

Muscat, March 29, 2011

Omran, a leading tourism-related development, investment and management company in Oman, won top honours at the 'Meed Quality Awards for Projects' for timely delivery of Asian Beach Games site.

Omran started work on the games site in June 2008 and completed the project in an impressive 900 days. The site was handed over to the Muscat Asian Beach Games Organising Committee in November 2010, just on time and on budget, said a company statement.

Omran was selected by the Oman Society of Engineers as the winner of the 'Leisure & Tourism Project of the Year' category in the Sultanate, as part of the regional finals for the annual Meed awards competition.

The company triumphed over other projects from within the Sultanate to win the category for the delivery of Al-Musannah Sports City - the site of the second Asian Beach Games held in December 2010, said a company statement.

The project was also shortlisted to represent Oman at a regional level for the GCC-wide awards.

The projects nominated for the Meed awards are required to demonstrate excellence in economic and social master-planning, architecture and design, as well as engineering, construction and sustainability.

These projects are independently judged by a team of industry professionals representing the Society of Engineers within each GCC country. They recognise and celebrate the individual project teams who have demonstrated excellence in design, construction and delivery for new projects across the region, completed within the past year.

Wael Bin Ahmed Al Lawati, CEO of Omran, said, 'This is a fantastic achievement for Omran and reflects years of commitment and hard work poured into this project by our in-house delivery team and our many partners including the main contractor, Larsen & Toubro.'

'We are particularly proud of our project safety record, which saw more than 2,500 workers complete 12 million man hours without lost-time incident (LTI), and the positive impact made to local communities,' Al Lawati remarked.

Since hosting the games, the site has been utilised as a mixed-use residential, commercial and tourism destination, based around Oman’s first marina hotel development.

The facilities include a 4-star hotel Millennium Resort, residential apartments, a variety of restaurants and meeting and conference facilities complete with media and business centres.

More than 200 jobs were created for people from local communities and Omran worked together with Injaz Oman on training programmes for more than 2,000 students, to prepare them for employment within the private sector, he added.

Al Lawati pointed out that the award was a great indication of the quality projects being delivered by Omran across the country.

“Winning this award also reflects the sound project management processes we have in place for all our projects, including health & safety, sustainable development and responsible tourism practices.  This stands us in good stead for the development of all our future projects throughout Oman.”
