ME hotel occupancy edges down in May

Hotel occupancy in the Middle East was recorded at 60.4 per cent during the month of May, representing a decline of 1.8 per cent from the corresponding period in 2010, said a report.

The region’s RevPAR (revenue per available room) also witnessed a decline of 3.6 per cent to $107 during the month, compared to $108 in Europe, $89 in the Asia Pacific region, and $64 in the Americas, said the Deloitte Analysis of Selected STR Global Hotel Performance Data.

Dubai’s hotels witnessed an increase in occupancy of 0.7 per cent to reach 69.9 per cent during the month of May 2011, which is an achievement in the face of increased supply.

The city’s hotels witnessed an increase of 2 per cent in RevPAR to reach $133 during the month of May.

Dubai city organised events such as PhotoWorld Dubai Exhibition, Arabian Travel Market 2011, The Hotel Show & FM Expo to enjoy the privilege of increased occupancy during the month of May, the report said.

Abu Dhabi’s occupancy during the month of May 2011 was 64.2 per cent, compared to 54.7 per cent during the corresponding period in 2010.

RevPAR in the city was $93 during the month of May 2011, compared to $102 during the corresponding period in 2010, said the report.

Events such as Shams Festival 2011, Middle East Communications, World Robot Olympiad & Global Space & Satellite Forum helped the city experience increase in occupancy in May.

Hotels in Beirut witnessed an occupancy of 56.9 per cent during the month of May 2011 compared to 69.1 per cent during the corresponding period in 2010. RevPAR for the city witnessed a decline of 26.6 per cent to $108 in May.

Jeddah’s occupancy was recorded at 69.5 per cent during the month of May 2011 with an increase of 1.9 per cent from the corresponding period in 2010. RevPAR for the city saw an increase of 8 per cent to reach $136 during the month of May, compared to $126 in the corresponding period in 2010.

The city conducted events such as Fourth International Forum for e-marketing, Gitex 2011 & Jeddah International Exhibition of Fashion & Clothes that have contributed towards increase in occupancy as well as RevPAR.

Muscat’s hotel occupancy was recorded at 40.8 per cent during May 2011, down by 18.8 per cent compared to 50.3 per cent during the corresponding period in 2010. The city’s RevPAR during May 2011 decreased by 22 per cent to $79, compared to $102 in 2010.

The city has a positive attitude to encourage more tourists by conducting events such as Medcon & Oman Travel Market. The Ministry of Tourism and hoteliers in the region are committed to promoting the region’s tourism industry, said the Deloitte analysis.

Cairo’s hotel occupancy was recorded at 34.4 per cent during May 2011, down by 47.6 per cent compared to 65.6 per cent during the corresponding period in 2010
The city’s RevPAR during May 2011 decreased by 49.3 per cent to $41, compared to $79 in 2010.

The city is gradually recovering from the political disturbance. The city held events such as the World Jazz Concert as signs of recovery from the disturbance, the report said. – TradeArabia News Service
