Kenya starts work on $654m airport project

Kenya is set to start the work on its new $654 million terminal at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport which on completion in 2017 will handle 20 million passengers every year.

President Uhuru Kenyatta, who commissioned the project today (December 5) said the work will begin on the hitech facility soon in two phases which is due to be completed by 2017.

Speaking after presiding over the groundbreaking ceremony, Kenyatta said the new passenger terminal is among developments that will usher in a new era in African Aviation.

"This facility will enhance our efforts to uplift the living standards of the Kenyan people through business opportunities and fostering national and regional socio-economic integration and development. It will open up Kenya to the world and stand as a testament of our openness to global partnerships," stated the president.

Upon completion, the new terminal will have capacity to handle 20 million passengers every year, he added.
 
Construction of the new terminal will be done by Anhui Civil Engineering Group (ACEG)/ China Aero- Technology Engineering International Engineering Corporation (CATIC) JV.

Spanning 178,000 sq m, the terminal will boast of key facilities including 50 international and 10 domestic check-in points; 32 contact and 8 remote gates; an associated apron with 45 stands and linking taxiways; a railway terminal; and a bus parking lot.

Further to the construction of this new terminal other projects lined up include the re design of Terminals 1, 2 and 3, a Second Runway, and Remote Stands/ Bussing Gates, said Kenyatta.

The terminal is conceived as a hub terminal for efficient connectivity for transiting passengers, and is designed as an environmentally sustainable building.

"It will be certified by the World Green Building Council using either the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design or Green Star certification processes," he added.-TradeArabia News Service
