Family business focus for KPMG conference

MANAMA, October 11, 2015

Transition in family enterprises and preparing the next generation to move into leadership roles will form the agenda for the upcoming Middle East and South Asia (MESA) Family Business Conference in Bahrain.

Hosted by KPMG in Bahrain, part of the global network of professional firms providing audit, tax and advisory services, the event will take place under the theme “the next generation”, on October 31 at the Art Rotana hotel in Amwaj Island.

Family enterprises account for a major share of businesses across the region in most industries.  The twenty-first century is a new era of global opportunity – particularly for family businesses that appreciate the importance of planning and managing transitions in leadership, governance and ownership.

All business families have the challenge of planning a handover from one generation to the next. The KMPG Family Business Conference is designed for business families interested in exploring the latest strategies about family business leadership.

Jamal Fakhro, KPMG’s managing partner said: “We are proud to host this conference for the first time in Bahrain, emphasizing the Kingdom's prominence as a business hub. We are looking forward to giving participants the opportunity to benefit from local and international insight which our prestigious speakers will be sharing, together with KPMG’s experience.”

The conference will feature presentations from senior local and international speakers.

Fakhro and Khalid Al Rumaihi, chief executive of the Bahrain Economic Development Board (EDB), will inaugurate the event and share their insights and vast industry experience.

Al Rumaihi said: "family businesses are an essential part of the region's economic environment, accounting for three-quarters of the GCC's private sector economy for example, and this event will present an important platform to discuss and explore the opportunities and challenges for these organisations. Now more than ever, family businesses have to be able to balance succession planning with delivering strong management, sound governance and sustainable growth.”

Additionally, Christophe Bernard, KPMG’s Global Head of Family Business, and Harish Gopinath, Partner at KPMG in Bahrain will deliver a joint presentation on family business governance and planning.

Following that, there will be a presentation from Professor Randel Carlock, founding Director of the Wendel International Centre for Family Enterprise and Professor in Entrepreneurial Leadership, on next generation perspective, developing a family constitution, talent development, and wealth preservation and stewardship. The event will be concluded with a panel discussion on first generation by prominent business owners in Bahrain and the region.

The event will feature a cocktail reception on October 31, which will be attended by Tamkeen’s chairman Shaikh Mohammed bin Essa Al Khalifa and a number of prominent family business owners, followed by a one-day conference on November 1.

Family business owners and leaders from the GCC and the wider Middle East and South Asia regions are expected to attend the event, which provides the ideal opportunity for networking and knowledge-sharing. – TradeArabia News Service
