Oman ... to make available affordable housing units to nationals.

Oman to set up affordable housing complexes

MUSCAT, May 7, 2015

Oman government has started working on its ambitious plan to set up affordable housing complexes across the country in co-ordination with real estate development companies, said a report.

The selection of the most suitable locations for these complexes is under way at various governorates in co-ordination with the Ministry of Housing, reported Oman Observer.

The Supreme Council for Planning (SCP) had last year commissioned a study on the establishment of model modern residential complexes under the directives of His Majesty Sultan Qaboos.

The study focused on how these complexes can contribute in meeting the growing demand for residential units, and to provide alternative for citizens seeking suitable housing. The study also took note of similar projects and schemes in various countries around the world, said the report.

The project will be implemented in the coming years with the help of real estate development companies, investment funds or in government-private partnership.

Omani authorities are also working on a plan to allow real estate developers to enter into long-term contracts with the municipalities for the speedy development of new lands and for using them to set up integrated residential complexes with quality infrastructure and other amenities.

The major aim of the project is to make these complexes available to needy Omani nationals at affordable prices, the report added.
