RTA to build 100 smart bus shelters in Dubai

DUBAI, February 24, 2016

Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has announced plans to construct 100 smart air-conditioned bus shelters (with complimentary WiFi internet connectivity) across the emirate by the end of March.

The RTA has set a time chart for the ambitious plan with about 25 shelters to be completed this month and the remaining due for completion by the end of March, said Mattar Al Tayer, the director-general and board chairman.

He was speaking after inaugurating the first smart air-conditioned shelter for bus riders in Jumeirah on Tuesday.

The smart bus shelters project is being developed by RTA in co-operation with the Right Angle Company and UAE telecom services operator du as part of government’s efforts to transform Dubai into the smartest city in the world, offering 24-hour services to the public.

The shelter, which is fitted with complimentary WiFi internet connectivity, offers several other services to the public, stated Al Tayer in the presence of senior officials including Fahad Al Hasawi, the chief commercial officer at Du and Nikhil Jagmohan, the executive director of Right Angle Company.

It is the first of 100 smart shelters to be constructed by the RTA in 15 districts of Dubai, he added.

Besides Jumeirah, these shelters will come up at key areas including the Sheikh Zayed Road, Al Wasl, Deira, Umm Al Romool, Al Quoz, Al Rashidiya, Al Qusais, Al Awir, Al Nahda, Al Satwa, Al Karama, Al Ras, Al Garhoud, and Al Jafiliya.

The smart shelter hosts a wide spectrum of services for bus riders including selling and top-up of NOL cards, top-up of mobile phones for local and international networks, paying bills of public and private entities internally and abroad, recharging mobile phones and smart kiosk, said Al Tayer.

Besides, it will boast of interactive media and advertising screens, displaying info about RTA’s services and a mini mart for selling refreshments and snacks, he added.-TradeArabia News Service
