Dubai's solar park substation project on track

DUBAI, April 20, 2016

About 67 per cent of the work has been completed on the 400 kilovolt (kV) substation project at the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park in Dubai, UAE.

The power station, being developed by Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (Dewa), is on track for opening by the fourth quarter of this year.

The progress that has been made on the project adheres to the Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050, stated Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, the managing director and chief executive of Dewa after visiting the project site located in the Seih Al Dahal area of the emirate.

Officials of Swiss company ABB, the main contractor for the project, briefed Al Tayer about the latest developments on the main Dh275 million ($75 million) substation, which has a conversion capacity of 1,515 megavolt amperes (MVA).

The on-site construction works at the substation has been divided into four sections. The first includes a 400 kV substation with 11 gas-insulated switchgears (GIS).

The second section converts from 400 kV to 132 kV with a conversion capacity of 1,515 MVA. It includes three 400/132 kV interconnecting transformers.

The third section has 21 GIS, while the fourth section houses the control and safety facilities, said senior officials of ABB, which is co-operating with a number of companies, including Energo and Comodor, to finish the project on time.

Al Tayer emphasised the importance of meeting the deadline while adhering to health and safety criteria, because the project is essential for power transmission.

He was accompanied by Dewa officials - Hussain Lootah, the executive vice president of transmission power, Waleed Salman, the executive vice president of strategy and business development, Khawla Al Mehairi, vice president of marketing and corporate communications, Moza Al Akraf, the chief information officer, Saeed Al Jallaf, the vice president of transmission projects and permits, and Khalifa Al Mehairi, vice president of distribution maintenance.-TradeArabia News Service
