KOA launches UAE’s first large-scale upcycling project

DUBAI, April 2, 2017

KOA, a developer of unique community projects in the UAE, has launched the UAE’s first large-scale upcycling project, Canvas, demonstrating its leadership in the up-and-coming trend that is typically the domain of the design students and local markets in Al Serkal and Al Quoz areas in Dubai.

Canvas has demonstrated the creative reuse (upcycling) of an existing office block to launch a sustainable, residential haven in Dubai, said the company in a statement.

‘Canvas’ is located near Mohammed bin Rashid Gardens, off the Emirates Road, offering its residents peace and tranquility with landscaped gardens and vast expanses of green space.

It is currently offering studio, one-, two- and three-bedroom apartment floor plans, with several layout options for available, it stated.

KOA was created by Mohammed Bin Zaal, former CEO of Al Barari, with the aim of leading Dubai’s real estate industry into a new era of cultural and urban enrichment that contributes to the soul of a dynamic new Dubai.

The Canvas building was stripped back to its shell and built outwards again, recycling some materials as well as creating a new architectural masterpiece on a blank, concrete canvas.

At the heart of the concept, the aim was to connect culture, nature and unmatched amenities in one creative space, said the Emirati developer.

Canvas has been built with a sustainable mindset, using specific materials and structural elements such as grey quartzite stone cladding, copper mesh and sustainably-sourced, thermally-modified tulipwood to reduce AC consumption, it stated.

Zaal, the chief executive of KOA and visionary behind Canvas, said: "Our mission is to develop urban ecosystems representing innovation, substance and craftsmanship. We have taken this a step further with Canvas to reuse an existing building to upcycle creatively to offer the people of Dubai a sanctuary from the city, a creative hub for inspired collaboration or simply a family home."

"It offers a new approach to modern living in Dubai merging old with new – craftsmanship with striking modernity and innovation in design. Design means everything to us and upcycling has provided an extra way to create new and innovative living spaces," remarked Zaal.

According to him, Canvas will have an unmatched range of features and facilities including the gourmet market, daycare facilities, fitness studios, swimming pool, water features, landscaped gardens, barbecue areas, a co-working space and art displays around the grounds.

KOA had officially launched the sales of Canvas units this January. The first phase of the innovative UAE project is likely to be ready in early 2018.-TradeArabia News Service
