New breast cancer test launched in Dubai

Dubai, April 8, 2010

UK-based London Breast Clinic, which provides a full range of integrated breast care services, has launched BCtect, an innovative blood test for early detection of breast cancer, at an ongoing beauty and wellbeing event in Dubai.

Women’s World Live, a consumer event showcasing the latest in beauty treatments, diet plans, styles and exercises, opened yesterday (April 7) at the Dubai International Convention and Exhibition Centre to run up to April 10.

The London Breast Clinic is already well established among women from the GCC, welcoming at least four or five women from the region every week, a statement said.

Breast cancer is the most common cancer affecting both Emirati and expatriate women in the UAE; 28 per cent of all female deaths in the emirates are from breast cancer, making it the second most common cause of death, it added.

BCtect, which is launched in the UAE just one week after it was launched in the UK, is used alongside mammographic screenings, which can still miss cancers, especially in younger women.

Current diagnostic methods have limitations in their diagnostic accuracy in females with dense breasts but the BCtect test has the potential to distinguish between benign and malignant disease and is as accurate in pre-menopausal women as in those who are post-menopausal, as well as across cancer stages and types.

These unique characteristics offer improved early diagnostic capabilities in pre-menopausal females over current technologies.

“I believe that this test is the most significant development in the detection of early breast cancer in the last decade worldwide,” said Dr James MacKay, genetic oncologist at The London Breast Clinic.

“To be able to offer such a test as BCtect alongside regular mammography is an exciting prospect for us; increasing the pick up rate of early breast cancer in young women in especially important.”

While many women from the Middle East travel to the UK for personal checks, and can receive a mammogram and the new BCtect test for an introductory price of Dh2,760 ($751) until October at The London Breast Clinic, it is hoped that women in the UAE will now be able to send their blood samples to the doctors at the clinic for testing which will be analysed alongside the mammogram results.

The team from The London Breast Clinic will work with any surgeries and clinics in the UAE to facilitate sending the blood samples to the UK for the BCtect test, saving patients time and money, the statement added. – TradeArabia News Service
