Bahraini diabetes site wins global honours

Manama, November 20, 2013

Bahraini project ‘Diabetes.bh’ has been selected as one of the best websites in the 'Fight Poverty, Hunger and Disease' category at the recently held World Summit Youth Award (WSYA) conference in Sri Lanka.

The 'Diabetes.bh' is incubated and hosted under sustainable development consultancy and think-do-tank, 3BL Associates, a social enterprise co-founded by Leena Al Olaimy and Tariq Al Olaimy, and established in joint partnership with Al Muqla Investments and the Gulf Marcom Group (GMG).

It is a collaboration between members of civic society, youth and private individuals and organizations. The others spearheading the delivery of the website are The Blue Camels, Team D and the Bahrain Diabetes Society.

'Diabetes.bh' is an online education and community portal for diabetes in Bahrain and the region, through which stakeholders, specialists, hospitals, clinics, universities and others institutions working in the medical field can help one another in order to create a collaborative environment for Bahraini people suffering from this disease.

The founding members of the online platform are: EmadNaeemi, HishamShehabi, Saleh Al Derazi and Tariq Al Olaimy.

In his comments, Prof Peter Bruck, the chairman of the WSYA Board, said: "'Diabetes.bh' is not only contributing to achieve a more healthy population in Bahrain, but also enhancing the economy and productivity of the country."

"We have to highlight the fact that this is the first platform exclusively targeting diabetes in this region. This year, ‘Diabetes.bh’ is the only Bahraini winner of this international contest that celebrates youth best digital content addressing the UN MDGs," he added.

Hosted by the Sri Lankan Information and Communication Technology Agency (ICTA) and in partnership with the World Summit Award (WSA), the winners’ ceremony was celebrated at the WSA Global Congress recently in Colombo.

The event featured world-class keynote speeches on e-content and mobile applications, hands-on workshops and engaging panel discussions about social entrepreneurship and the content industry.-TradeArabia News Service
