Dermatopathology lab opens in Dubai Science Park

DUBAI, November 26, 2015

Dubai Science Park (DSP), a free zone community dedicated to facilitating and fostering the growth of the UAE’s science sector, said International Dermpath Consult, an innovative private laboratory dedicated solely to the practice of dermatopathology, has launched its operations within DSP’s Laboratory Complex.

Founded and run by Dr Reem El Bahtimi, an American Board Certified Dermatopathologist, it is the only laboratory in the UAE specialised solely in the field of dermatopathology.

Its features include a state-of-the-art information system that allows the integration of images and the delivery of a report to physicians within seconds of release.

The system also uses smart technology, alerting patients by SMS to sample registration and release.

Marwan Abdulaziz, executive director, Dubai Science Park, said: “We are working towards implementing the Government’s National Innovation Strategy, which aims to make the UAE one of the most innovative countries in the world, and providing an appropriate destination for unique laboratories such as Dermpath’s is a good example of how we are playing our part.

"The lab is a first of its kind in the UAE and will provide tailored, efficient and effective solutions for people with serious skin conditions. Its presence in DSP is yet another piece in our effort to create a world class and innovation driven science sector.”

The skin is the largest system in the body and needs constant attention.

Dermatologists are able to recognise most skin diseases based on their appearance, anatomic distribution, and behaviour. However, sometimes, those criteria do not allow a conclusive diagnosis to be made, and a skin biopsy is taken to be examined under the microscope.

Dermatopathology is a highly specialised field and a joint specialty of dermatology and pathology that focuses on the study of cutaneous diseases at a microscopic and molecular level.

Dermpath Consult have individualised the service and operate within a quick turn-around time, with full capacity to process up to 240 specimens per day, and with most specimens being released within 24 hours.

All specimens are examined by an American Board Certified dermatopathologist at the ISO15189 accredited laboratory facility within DSP.

“Our lab offers diagnostic excellence and unparalleled service in the evaluation of dermatologic disorders ranging from the routine, to the most difficult cases. Dubai Science Park is home to some of the region’s leading science companies due to their world class laboratories and infrastructure, and is the perfect location for us and SMEs in the science sector to setup in the region.

"The unique facilities at DSP provide the perfect site for our state of the art laboratory, and we look forward to working in partnership with DSP in the future.”

Dubai Science Park supports both SMEs and global firms looking for a regional base for their Middle East operations, by facilitating a custom-built yet vibrant community.

With over 280 companies currently located within the community, DSP is committed to the industry’s success by bringing together business, regulators and Government in partnership. - TradeArabia News Service
