Bahrain tops GCC in Environmental Performance Index

MANAMA, February 17, 2016

Bahrain has been ranked first in the Gulf region and sixth in the Middle East in the Environmental Performance Index (EPI) issued at the World Economic Forum, according to a report.

The important indicator of environmental development highlights the significant role played by Bahrain’s Supreme Council for the Environment (SCE) in developing environmental policies in the kingdom and maintaining a safe environment, said the Bahrain News Agency (BNA) report.

Shaikh Abdulla bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the personal representative of His Majesty the King and President of the SCE, said: "This significant achievement is recognition of the successful work carried out by the SCE and represents a key milestone in the Kingdom’s long-term environment protection and development plans."

The SCE and relevant bodies within Bahrain pay close attention to the Environmental Performance Index due to its detailed findings and recommendations, and note that the report is considered an important international reference and environmental performance indicator that falls in line with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals.

Looking to this year and beyond, Dr Mohammed Bindaina, the chief executive of the SCE, said: "The SCE will continue to work diligently on exploring and developing new policies and safeguards which will help to maintain a clean, sustainable environment for Bahrain’s future generations."

Bahrain achieved 70.07 points, while its score was 51.83 in 2014, said the report.

The kingdom’s environmental performance has increased 7.45 per cent in the last ten years which is a significant achievement and confirms the Kingdom’s commitment to the environmental sector. - TradeArabia News Service
