Suez Canal revenues rise to $504.5m for Aug

Egypt's revenues from the Suez Canal rose to $504.5 million in August 2008 from $403 million in the same month last year, the government said on Thursday.

The canal is an important source of foreign currency for Egypt, along with tourism, oil and gas exports and remittances from Egyptians living abroad.

The number of vessels passing through the waterway rose to 1,993 in August from 1,854 in July and 1,755 in August 2007, the government said on its information portal.-Reuters
