3Com switches ‘use 40pc less energy’

Dubai, August 25, 2009

3Com Corporation, an enterprise networking solutions provider, said that its networking switches were evaluated by Miercom, a provider of independent test services, and were found to use up to 40 per cent less energy than competing products.

Miercom evaluated “the overall environmental impact and business enabling green benefits” of 3Com’s H3C S7506E and H3C S5500-EI enterprise networking switches and rated them “Miercom Green Certified”, said a statement.

Miercom, as part of its certified Green Test Program, evaluated the power consumption and efficiency of the switches, and reported that the H3C 5500-EI stackable switch with 24- and 48-port models are up to 40 per cent more energy efficient in terms of watts of energy used per gigabits per second of performance.

The H3C S7506E modular, multilayer 10-Gigabit and gigabit switch is up to 24 per cent more energy efficient than comparable products.

3Com’s entire H3C enterprise networking portfolio is designed to deliver the industry’s lowest total cost of ownership (TCO).

Miercom also reported that organisations can realise further cost savings by deploying the new H3C intelligent management center (IMC) to manage their network.

IMC is an end-to-end enterprise-class management solution that provides unique single-pane management of the entire heterogeneous enterprise network infrastructure and integrates with existing systems to deliver heightened efficiency and value. IMC’s centralized remote administration capability can help reduce network administration costs.

“Our commitment to developing products with low ‘TCO by design’ sets our H3C portfolio apart from the competition,” said Mahmoud El-Ali, general manager, 3Com – Mena.

“Miercom’s test results confirm that the H3C S7505E and S5500-EI are the right choices for enterprises that want outstanding price/performance and energy efficiency from their network infrastructure investment, particularly in today’s economy,” he added.

The newest H3C products feature the latest 90nm silicon technology, which increases performance without increasing power usage.

According to Miercom, “The silicon technology delivers a 35 per cent increase in processor speed, while reducing active power needs by 60 per cent.”

“Using merchant silicon instead of proprietary ASICs, the H3C portfolio features the most modern and low-power chipsets available,” El-Ali continued.

“By developing products that use far less power than the industry average, 3Com enables enterprises to reduce capital expenditures and spend less money on energy to run their networks.  This embodies 3Com’s commitment to ‘no-compromise’ networks, where enterprises don’t have to compromise performance and features in order to save money.”

According to Miercom, the annual operating cost of the H3C S7506E is 24 per cent lower than the industry average. The annual operating cost of the H3C S5500-EI is 17 per cent below the industry average, for both the 24- and 48-port models.

All H3C and 3Com products comply with international restrictions on the use of certain hazardous substances in electrical components, while also following the guidelines for disposing and recycling them, said a statement. – TradeArabia News Service
