Abu Dhabi TV launches new sports channel

ABU DHABI, February 15, 2015

Abu Dhabi TV has launched a new sports channel, which will also focus on broadcasting documentaries, contests, news and short segments related to sports.

‘Yas’ was launched by Sheikh Hazza bin Zayed Al Nahyan, National Security Advisor and Deputy Chairman of Abu Dhabi Executive Council and Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Presidential Affairs, at the President's Endurance Cup; being the first sporting events covered on the channel.

Mohamed Ebraheem Al Mahmood, chairman and managing director of Abu Dhabi Media said: “Our newly launched channel represents and honours both our nations’ past and present. ‘Yas’ cultivates sports by showcasing them on a global platform for today’s audiences, complemented by sheer technical brilliance.”

“Media is considered a key pillar for national education and the preservation of cultural assets within the country. With the gracious support of our wise leadership, the launch of ‘Yas’ channel will be a milestone in the revival of competitive sports,” Al Mahmood added.

Yas, whose name traces back to the UAE ‘Bani Yas’ tribe, operates based on a clear National Vision that identifies sports as a human language and as the link connecting our innovations and achievements, rising above common differences such as age, background, and nationality.”

Abdul Hadi Al Sheikh, executive director of Television at Abu Dhabi Media said: “Yas will become the leading channel covering both local and international sport events. We are committed to adopting the latest technology that will aid in showcasing these vibrant sports and introducing them to new audiences.”


Daily programmes will include shows such as “Flash News” where our audience will follow the latest news through creative and compact delivery of content. “Lifestyle” will be focused on fitness, health and nutrition; while the morning shows will include “Marhaban Al Alam,” a show that will host celebrities and guests to discuss topics related to traditional sports.

Weekly programmes will cover sports in more depth and will include a set of shows such as “Al Hatheera” focused on falconry activities and "Al Rakkad" which will showcase authentic Arabian sports of Emirati and Gulf origin. "Al Fares" show will focus on horse racing on the local, regional and international scenes. "Al Qudra" will shed lights on endurance racing and related activities in addition to the importance of this sport on a regional and global level.

As for water and marine sports, "Al Serdal” show will broadcast weekly showcasing marine sports with a special concentration on global competitions that UAE champions participate in. – TradeArabia News Service
