Borealis and its Middle East joint venture partner Borouge have taken on co-sponsorship of the Stockholm Water Prize.

The award was presented by the King of Sweden in the Stockholm City Hall recently during World Water Week.

This year’s prize laureate, Professor Perry L. McCarty, from Stanford University in the United States, was rewarded for his groundbreaking work in developing a scientific approach for the design and operation of water and wastewater systems.

He has defined the field of environmental biotechnology, which forms the basis for small and large-scale pollution control and safe drinking water systems.

Borealis and Borouge’s co-sponsorship of the renowned Stockholm Water Prize rewards and supports world-class best practices and scientific progress to address water and sanitation challenges.

First presented in 1991, the Stockholm Water Prize is an international award presented yearly to an individual, organisation or institution for outstanding water-related activities in the fields of aid, awareness building and education, technology, management or science.

The award includes a $150,000 award and a crystal sculpture. The prize laureate is announced each March on UN World Water Day and honoured each August at a Royal Prize Ceremony and Banquet in the Stockholm City Hall during the World Water Week in Stockholm.
