Jordan drafts 5-year plan to boost agri sector

Amman, December 24, 2008

Aiming to nourish Jordan’s agricultural sector, the Kingdom is drafting five year strategies that would focus on boosting output of fodder, cereal grain and animal production, quoted the Jordan Times.

Earlier in October, King Abdullah had announced a development package to boost the country’s agricultural sector.

Secretary General of the Ministry of Agriculture, Radi Tarawneh, indicated that a draft document outlining challenges facing the sector would be compiled during a meeting at the end of the month.

The ministry has already provided seeds at cost, as well as artesian wells, for a 54 million sq. m cereal grains and fodder project. The ministry is encouraging farmers to increase production of wheat, barley, and fodder in order to increase the country's grain reserves.

To encourage farmers, the ministry announced that it would pay each farmer 5 Jordan dinars ($7) for each 1,000 sq. m dedicated to grain crops. When finalised the plan will be implemented from 2009 to 2013.
