New e-government strategy on way

Manama, June 11, 2009

Work will start later this year on Bahrain's 2011-2014 new e-government strategy, Cabinet Affairs Minister Shaikh Ahmed bin Ateyatalah said on Wednesday.

'The three-year scheme will be unveiled by middle of next year,' Sheikh Ahmed added.

Once completed and approved, the strategy will be implemented by early 2011.

He also revealed plans to woo foreign information and communication technology (ICT) firms to establish their operations in Bahrain.

'Agreements have been sealed with leading regional and international ICT firms,' he told Bahrain News Agency.

He said more than 50 experts from CISCO Systems, STS and Affno were working for the e-Government Authority (eGA).

There are also plans to expand the number to exceed 100 in addition to 150 IT employees in government departments.

'The dividends of these efforts to further anchor information technology would benefit the national economy and people.'

A recent study has shown that the e-government strategy has achieved 85 per cent satisfaction.

'According to initial plans, the benchmark rate was supposed to be honoured in 2010.'

The eGA has also embarked on ambitious plans to increase the number of cyber services from the existing 90 to 130 and then 200 by next year.

Accordingly, three portals for Bahrain gate, mobile phones and public services have been launched.

A fourth portal, dubbed as the comprehensive national telecommunication centre, will also be launched later this year.

The e-mobile portal allows easy access to ministries and government departments.

The number of e-mobile services is expected to top 50 this year, up from 16. These include e-exam results for students and e-aviation information. – TradeArabia News Service
