GCC urged to unify rules for fishermen

Manama, May 24, 2010

Bahrain has called for rules and regulations allowing GCC amateur fishermen to practise their hobby within member states’ territorial waters.

It submitted a memorandum to the GCC general-secretariat during the Foreign Ministers’ meeting in Jeddah.

The memorandum aims to avert negative repercussions which may result from the recent incident in which a Bahraini amateur fisherman was fired at by Qatari coastguards at the maritime border. it also aims to prevent any repeat of such incidents which may affect relations between member states.

Bahrain also stressed the importance of approving unified procedures governing GCC nationals’ fishing and pleasure boats, which may stray into other member states’ territorial waters.

“Bahrain urges all efforts to be exerted cordially towards achieving security and stability and averting the interference of any other parties,” the Foreign Ministry said in the memorandum.

It also asserted Bahrain’s commitment to GCC goals, which aim to strengthen co-ordination between member states.-TradeArabia News Service
