Switch to new light tech could save 70pc in costs

Dubai, October 11, 2010

Simply switching from older lighting technology in public and commercial buildings to the latest devices could bring 70 per cent savings in energy costs and significant cuts in CO2 emissions, according to a study by Philips Electronics.

Philips is a major sponsor at this year’s Light Middle East exhibition and conference to be held from October 31 to November 2 at the Dubai International Convention and Exhibition Centre.

According to the Philips study, the savings potential of switching to new lighting technology in buildings is estimated at Dh33 billion ($8.98 billion) per annum in the Middle East and Africa and Dh293.6 billion globally per annum.

“Epoc Messe Frankfurt is dedicated to saving the environment and with our headquarters Messe Frankfurt in Germany, supports major international initiatives along these lines. One of our local contributions is making sure that Light Middle East, along with Garden+Landscaping Middle East are carbon neutral exhibitions,” stated Ahmed Pauwels, chief executive officer of Epoc Messe Frankfurt, organiser of Light Middle East.

“On average only one per cent of office lighting uses lighting controls whereby daylight adaption and presence detection can be incorporated. Individual project savings of 60-70 per cent in energy costs per year could be achieved by switching from old to new office lighting,” said Eduardo Mataix, chairman of Philips Lighting in the Middle East.

Philips research has also stated that the impact on the environment by switching to the new energy efficient technology in the Middle East and Africa is equivalent to a saving of 49 million tonnes of CO2 emissions, or 108 million barrels of oil in a year or the output of 38 power stations @ 2TWh/yr.

In addition to this, Philips has noted that public and commercial buildings represent 60 per cent of global lighting electricity usage. With this figure in mind it has been noted that up to 80 per cent of office lighting is based on outdated and energy inefficient lighting systems, highlighting the enormity of the topic.

Additional benefits of energy efficient lighting include better light quality, lower mercury levels and smaller dimensions of lighting units.

Philips will be participating at the Light Middle East exhibition and will be presenting their research findings during the three day Light Focus Conference to be held alongside the exhibition.

Day 3 of the conference, will feature the Philips LED Forum and focus on ‘Reliability of LEDs: What is fact and what is fantasy?’ It will also feature an Exhibitor Expert’s Forum where exhibiting companies can share their latest innovations, educating visitors on the products and services available throughout the Gulf region.-TradeArabia News Service
