Club to boost social media skills

Manama, August 22, 2011

Bahrain's Social Media Club (SMC) is set to launch an awareness campaign on the proper approach to social, economic and political issues on the Internet.

SMC Bahrain chapter president Ali Sabkar said the initiative, being held in association with Facebook, LinkedIn, Yahoo and MSN among others, would be carried out in the next four months.

"These social media camps will target participants in developing their social media skills and make them more informed," he said. "The activities are part of the club's celebrating its fifth anniversary."

Bahrain had last month become the 49th country to join the global organisation SMC, which helps members become experts in the field through regular events.

Led by Mr Sabkar, other members include Ali Sabbagh, Eman Burashid, Hala Sulaiman, Adel Maymoon, Sari Mashal, Hussain Hussaini and Ammar Al Aradi.

Since its official launch, the Bahrain chapter has registered 40 members, but more than 300 regularly attend its meetings, said Sabkar.

"Membership is open to all residents who have a passion to spread education through social media and it is free and anyone who has an interest in social media can join," he said.

Sabkar said they were also planning activities with major Bahrain societies as well as holding special social media round tables every month for participants to share ideas and experiences.

"The quick and wide spread of social media between all ages has resulted in an exchange of culture and dialogue between users, especially among the youth," he said.

"It has encouraged further intellectual and social as well as economic and political activities between friends and other members of the society who we never interacted with before."

Popularity

Sabkar earlier said the Bahrain chapter was set up in view of the growing popularity of social media in the country.

The SMC has 318 chapters worldwide with 49 member countries.

To commemorate the SMC's fifth anniversary and to mark the holy month of Ramadan, the Bahrain chapter also recently organised a ghabga at the Elite Resort and Spa, Muharraq. Members, their families and friends as well as guests attended. – TradeArabia News Service
