'Bahrain 11' torch relay kicks off

The Bahrain 11 torch relay continued its tour across Bahrain’s five governorates on Saturday from Bahrain’s historic Arad Fort in the Muharraq Governorate.

Assistant General Secretary of the Bahrain Olympic Committee and VP of the Bahrain 11 Executive Committee for volleyball  Jihad Hassan Khalfan and Governor of Muharraq Isa bin Hindi handed the torch to Saleh bin Hindi, consultant to HM the King for Youth and Sport who lit the torch marking the commencement of the second day of the relay.

From the fort, the torch was carried along the 5.15 km route through Muharraq on foot and motorcycle, finally ending with a special celebration at Al Ghous Corniche Park located next to the old bridge.

The torch will next travel to the Northern Governorate’s Office on Sunday where the relay will commence.

The torch will be ceremonially lit and extinguished by the respective governorate dignitaries at the start and end of each relay.

Each relay starts at 3:30pm and ends at 5pm, and contains 30 individual torchbearers with several designated torch handover points along the way.

Upon arrival at the finishing point, unique festivities will take place that showcase the distinctiveness of each governorate for the enjoyment of the crowds.

Bahrain 11, scheduled to take place from October 11 to 22, will feature over 1,500 athletes from all GCC member nations who will compete in 10 sporting disciplines.

The games, the largest ever showcase of GCC sporting talent,  will be held in 9 venues across Bahrain. The featured sports are football, basketball, volleyball, handball, athletics (track and field), swimming, cycling, bowling, in addition to goalball and table tennis for women.-TradeArabia News Service
