Butchers fear losses as subsidies scrapped in Bahrain

MANAMA, October 2, 2015

There was a glaring absence of red meat at the Manama and Muharraq central markets yesterday (October 1), after butchers refused to pay higher prices for non-subsidised beef and mutton. Government meat subsidies were lifted yesterday and butchers baulked at the increased cost of purchasing produce from the Bahrain Livestock Company – the country’s main supplier of meat products, said a report in the Gulf Daily News (GDN), our sister publication.
