$190bn tourism projects for Dubai show

Dubai, January 17, 2008

Over 50 leading developers will showcase tourism projects worth over Dh700 billion ($191 billion) at the inaugural Tourism Development Projects and Investment Market (TDIM) exhibition in Dubai next week.

The exhibition, to be held from January 20 to 22, is being organised by Reed Exhibitions Middle East.

A number of local and international corporate and individual investors, tourism officials, tourism facilities operators, global destination brands and specialists are expected to take part.

Frederic Theux, president of Reed Exhibitions Middle East, said the global interest in the region’s tourism market had grown over the last few years and the sector was likely to grow phenomenally in the coming years.

Quoting a Reed market survey conducted in 2006, Theux said that estimated investments of over Dh1.2 trillion have already been committed to tourism-related projects in the GCC that are expected to be completed by 2018.

Theux said the tourism industry's excellent response to the newly conceived exhibition pointed to the tremendous potential that the sector holds out for further investment and development.

TDIM '08 is the first-ever show dedicated to developments and investments in the tourism sector, said a top official.

Khalid Ahmed Bin Sulayem, director general of DTCM, said: “TDIM provides an opportunity to address the challenges of boosting investment flows and know-how into the region's tourism sector. Tourism contributes 30 per cent to Dubai's economy and will play a major role in the emirate's target of tripling its gross domestic product (GDP) to $112 billion by 2015.”

“Dubai's hotels and apartment hotels last year received about 6.5 million visitors that contributed $3.5 billion to the emirate's economy,” he added.

The list of participants at the exhibition includes DTCM, Nakheel, Dubai World Central, Dubailand, Global Village, Bawadi, Plantation, Aldar, Sorouh, Al Qudra and Al Ain Wildlife Park.-TradeArabia News Service
